BSD TOONS
.
. Strange thing this top 5 tunes business, you would think that you could just close your eyes and come up with a list straight away, but I found it really hard
..
(OOER!)
.
I eventuatley came up with these, but ask me next week and they’ll probly be different
.
No 5 - WILLIAM SHATNER – THAT’S ME TRYING
. yes the captain of the kirk himself, written by ben folds and nick hornby of fever pitch / about a boy fame, this is a story of just how sad people and life can be, and the fragility of relasionships, poetic and perfect for shatners narrative, ben folds and Aimee Manns backing vox are the icing on the cake
.
Taken from the brilliant, funny, sad and often daft 2004 album ‘HAS BEEN’ that was produced and arranged by one of my fave artists, ben folds
.
...
No 4 - TOM WAITS - TOM TRAUBETS BLUES
.I listen to this, along with his song 'soldiers things' most days. another great poet, his lyrics would stand up against most anything on their own. His pained (some may say painful) vocals also give his songs a powerful and chilling delivery, especially the stripped down piano / vocal tracks
.
Listen to some of his live stuff, he’s actually a really funny bloke, mad as a friggin teapot, but really funny

No 3 - SLIPKNOT – DUALITY
.from my most listened to heavy album of the last few years, brilliant playing / singing and song structures from the raunchy, rubber faced noise merchants go to make up a classic album, with a top notch production that brings awesome power and clarity to the songs, this was probably the biggest track, and the one that is still being played everywhere!
.but 'opium of the people', 'before I forget' or 'vermillion' could just as easily have been on this list
. ...No 2 - MARTYN JOSEPH – CARDIFF BAY
.I first heard this song in a civic hall somewhere near Camden when martyn was doing a slot at one of tom Robinsons xmas parties in the early nineties. He walked up to the stage, took his acoustic out of its case and just started playing this song and everyone in the room was just gobsmacked. With just a guitar and his voice he managed to fill the entire hard, clynical, sports hall type room with this beautiful warm sound and feeling, just amazing. Real songs about people and life which he can deliver with a brilliant subtlety, passion and anger
.
A great songwriter, and one of the best and live performers I’ve ever seen... EVER!!

No 1 - STEVIE WONDER – HEAVEN HELP US ALL
. i especially love the 60’s and 70’s motown stuff, but always thought that stevie wonder brought something of his own to the songs which made them stand out from the rest, he sounded like he was really loving/ living every second of it. And this is the one song that always stuck with me, a really powerful number that just builds and builds. Great voice, great musician, great songwriter
. some peeps say he went too cheesy in the eighties, but cheesy can be good. Its lovely on toast
. well, thats it for another year ,
you should have a go
